Climbing in the Peak District

Introduction

The Peak District is a magnet for rock climbers and was one of the birthplaces of the modern sport.

Stanage Edge near Hathersage is one of the most popular locations, along with the Roaches and High Tor among others, offering short, severe cliff faces that test the climbers’ techniques even when only a few feet off the ground.

With internationally famous gritstone climbs and the corresponding different skills needed on the limestone bluffs, there’s something to tax even the most experienced climber. For beginners there are climbing centres which offer qualified instructions – details from the British Mountaineering Council.
